7 things you’ve always wanted to know about underfloor heating

In recent years, underfloor heating has become an increasingly popular method of heating. And for good reason! Underfloor heating is one of the most cost effective ways to keep our homes nice and warm. And as more and more people are choosing underfloor heating, more and more questions are arising about it.

And it turns out there are a lot of questions floating around – we found this out after asking on our social media feeds what our audience had always wondered about underfloor heating. In order for us to find out the answers, we teamed up with JG Speedfit, a British manufacturer who offers simple and affordable underfloor heating solutions that empower architects to create luxurious heat without having to compromise on interior design.

So here are the seven things our audience had always wanted to know about underfloor heating, answered by the Technical Director of JG Speedfit.

Is underfloor heating cheaper to run than radiators?
European studies state that UFH is cheaper to run than radiators in a solid floor, but more expensive with suspended floors.

Do I need a special boiler?
No, UFH just needs a heat source. However UFH is much better than radiators when working with low water temperature. Lending itself to work effectively when combined with AIR Source Heat Pumps and condensing boilers.

Can I use UHF on the upper floors?
Yes, the there are many solutions for upper floors.

Can underfloor heating be used under carpet and tile floors?
Tiled floors are better as they offer much less resistance to heat transfer from pipework to the room. Carpets can be used but need to be chosen with a view to minimise its affect on performance.

What is the best system - water or electric?
Water based systems can use almost any fuel source and generally have higher heat outputs. The cost of running water based systems is usually lower, as electricity is often up to 4 times more expensive than gas per KWhr.

Can underfloor heating be retrofitted to my house?
Yes, there are a number of options.

How long will an underfloor heating system last?
Pipework is often guaranteed for 50 years. Manifolds, mixing valves and controls can all be repaired or upgraded with little or no disruption.
